Will an outdoor digital antenna receive HD channels?

I saw one at radioshack, and I'll admit, I'm kind of slow on the uptake about this DTV conversion (although, I do understand about the converter/ cable box). But I'm tired of paying for cable, and am seriously considering just buying an antenna. I'm just curious, what the resolution will be, if I buy one, and if it would be worth it, to splurge and buy a new TV (I really don't see the point in spending $600 on a tv, when the one I have works fine)
Yes, I'm aware that I'll either need a digital tv, or a set top box. I thought I said that already.
 
Well if you want to get HD you need an antenna or cable box (if antenna then u need a converter box) and an HD compadible tv. But if you wana get digital all u need is a digital box or converter box (and an antenna) and any tv.
