Will an android 2.1 update take up a lot of space?

I have an HTC Droid Eris running android 1.5. I recently discovered that the phone's storage doesn't rely on the 8GB memory card that it houses to hold apps. I figure that this is the same case for the android os. I also am aware that the Eris will get an upgrade to 2.1 (or at least something with google nav). I'm nervous that the 2.1 update will take up a lot of room on my 77MB left of internal storage and I won't have a lot of room left. Should I be nervous? Am I wrong? Can someone direct me to an app or something that allows app storage on the SD card?
