Will a regular internet plan work on the Google Ion?

My buddy is using my old Google Ion. He wants to know if he was to just keep his $10 or $15 internet plan would he be able to browse the web without extra charges? I heard somewhere online that this is possible, but I am looking for people that have actually done this, if this works or not. Please let me know.
 
Depends on his service. I have Tmobile with my ION and I used to have Air card internet for my HTC Wizard. The service worked fine for 4 hours on my ION, then Tmobile realized I was on android and shut my internet down. I called them and they said i need to have a Android plan for Android phones. I argued with them for a hour that it worked fine for 4 hours and the system shut it off, and I want a work around on my plan. They wouldnt have any part of that. But I ended up getting a super cheap Grandfathered plan.
 
Thanks for the input zul8er, I really appreciate it. I am looking for input from a few others to have a good solid answer for him. Can anyone else confirm this?
