I have two pigeons and had two eggs on my balcony in a box, the pigeons nested there but are free to come and go. I've never seen any other animals on my balcony which is 4 stories up. The day before the 2nd baby hatched nicely (today) the first egg completely vanished. I awoke and it gone, shell and all. I looked but could not find even a bit of broken shell or dead baby bird anywhere in the box, on my balcony and on the ground beneath my balcony. All I can think of is that one of the parents ate the baby and shell for some reason, perhaps because the baby was not well developed or was born dead. Is this possible? What else could have happened? There is just no possibility I can otherwise think of knowing all the animals and birds around the city and in the neighborhood.
