will a master give me a higher rank in the army?

I am about finished with a degree in applied mathematics and want to get a masters in mathematical statistics, is there anyway that i can start out higher than O-1 and if not, will having a degree help me when it comes to things like promotions? perhaps i am being materialistic but thats how life is sometimes
