Will a dog die if it eats chocolate?

I've been told that dogs are allergic to chocolate and that if they eat it then the will die. Is this true? If so, then why?

It's not an allergy. Chocolate is toxic (poison) to dogs and will make them sick. I suppose if they ate enough of it they could possibly die, but would probably just throw it up and be sick
