have the motor at TDC, cannot get the rotor to point to #1 cylinder when i slide the dist. in. do i need to replace the dist. drive gear?

When you slide the distributor in, you will need to rotate the housing so that the rotor points at #1. The distributor may not sit all the way in because of the oil pump. You can use a long flat-head screwdriver to turn the oil pump so that it aligns with the bottom of the distributor gear.

Once you get the oil pump close to being aligned, use a wrench on the crankshaft pulley to turn the motor a little bit in each direction to allow the dist to align with the oil pump. If you end up being too far out of whack for proper timing with the distributor housing, pull the dist and rotate the shaft by one tooth (the distributor shaft) then install and turn the motor slightly again.

Once you get the motor ready to fire, align as close to proper timing then fire the motor and time it with a timing light.
