I have a 96 gt mustang that i got very very cheap the catch is it has no tranny. I want to turn it into a drag car and over the past few year i have really liked a c4 for drag racing. I have been told that i c4 will bolt up to early 4.6 blocks but not a newer one. i have also been told that with a few changes a c4 will bolt up but i dont know what changes have to be made. The other reason i want to put i c4 in it is because i have one and i called all around were i live and with in a 100 mile radius and no one has and 4r70w trannys for less than 1200 and im on a budget. so if anyone has tried this please let me know if it is possible.

I know that the C4 won't bolt up to a '96 4.6 block, however I'm sure that you could get an adapter plate made. But you've got another problem, the 4R70W transmission is electronically controlled by the computer that also controls the engine, so if you got the C4 to bolt up, you'd have to get a custom program for the computer that doesn't try controlling the transmission. On top of that, you'd need to get some custom shift linkage and downshift cables made.

By the time you got it all to run correctly, you probably will have spent more than $1200 However, the 4R70W transmission is used on just about every vehicle ford made that has a 4.6, and several junk yards around me have good used ones for about $400.
