will a auto dealer accept a car that was in an accident and not repaired as a trade?

The damage is cosmetic to the passenger side... and was considering trading it in before I got sideswiped by a clueless driver. It dented in the area behind the door and scratched the side a bit...

Yes. But prepare yourself for what they'll deduct from the trade in value. You're best bet is to get an estimate from a repair shop. If the amount that's deducted is within range of your estimate then you're getting a fair deal.

But if it's not close, show the appraiser your estimate and insist on that deduction only.

Yes, but he'll convince you that the damages are VERY expensive to repair and offer you very little for your car. Why not repair the damages and simply sell the car yourself. You'll get more money for it that way.
