Will 275mm tires be wide get traction under a 650hp street car?

Obviously the tire material / tread / etc matters a lot, but in general, is a 275mm wide tire enough get get traction? They will be street tires on an entirely street-driven car. I do not want to relocate the leaf springs if I do not have to; 275's are the widest I can fit in the stock wheel well.
