Wifes off to Hong Kong

Hey all,
My wife is off to HK for business soon, I was wondering if, a) I could get a new GSM quad band phone there that would work on TMobile here in the US, b) if buying in HK would be considerably cheaper than the US and c) does anyone know a reputable place with a good selection of unlocked phones in HK. Any help, as always, would be appreciated.
Cheers!

Amending original post, I know a 850/900/1800/1900 GSM phone would work in the US, more concerned with price, compatibility with with TMO (Ie: T zones etc.) and reputable dealer in Hong Kong.
Cheers,
Rob

Regarding the exchange rate:

HK$7.80 = US$1.00. Every day. It's an indexed currency.

And yeah, if she's not a local she might want to stick to big chain places like Broadway or Fortress so she won't get ripped off or fishy merchandise. Careful shoppers familiar with the market and who know what to watch for might be able to find deals at Sin Dat or Apliu Street, but most cell phone vendors there are somewhat shady at best.

Thanks for the info, my wife, though having done business in HK for years speaks no Chinese (all dialects) what so ever. She does have an assistant that does so I guess she'll be off to the big chains looking to get me a Samsung t629. Thanks again to all.

@wotanson
yes, it will work on T-mobile
yes, it CAN be cheaper in HK

now to the nitty gritty. buying at fortress and broadway, you're better off to buy in the US. You're pretty much getting market price. While she won't get ripped off like she would in TsimShaTsui (tourist district), she's not going to find any GREAT DEALS there either.
Going to independents (a la Apliu St).....she better take someone who knows the area and knows what they're talking about.

is it that easy to get ripped off? you probably have a general idea of how much the phone you want is worth so if you're bargaining with the seller it wouldnt be that hard to recognize if it were a good price or not would it?

@speedy.

like mwing said...some sell used phones as new.

On top of that, they do other silly little things......like sell you something they 'tell you' is better. And then all sorts of other things like extra batteries, headsets, cases, blah blah blah.

OR....they sell you something that LOOKS like what you're looking for, but really isn't.

OR.....they sell you the 'china' version that has simplified chinese ONLY.

Lots of things really. Plus if you buy from these independents, most of the time, there's no warranty.

@speedy

i've only seen one incident of that tho. someone bought a phone.....it was the newest model at the time....was all happy about it, didn't realise until later that it was an older model phone with the new casing. ie, p800 w/ a p990 casing. sth like that. but this was going back a few years.

Well thanks for all the advice, my wife left today, she'll be shopping with her agent who lives in HK and she'll be in constant contact with me. Hopefully all will go well, or I'll have a new doorstop, or I'm back to egay.
