There are 269,000 miles on this car. I have done all regular maint. It was a lien sale no frills vehicle before I got it. I just got a new battery as it needed one anyway and had the alternator checked. It registered no problems. When this light comes on my head lights with brighten. I have no owners manual etc. Also now it seems to not be shifting properly when going 65. It feels like it isn't going into overdrive (or whatever it is called). I do not want to ruin the car, but they want so much to just diagnose problems that I wouldn't be able to repair the vehicle spending what little I have to figure out the problem! Please advise if possible! Thank you :)
Is it hard and/or expensive to replace either of these items? I do not have a problem paying, but the labor costs have gone so high that on a fixed income it is hard to manage repairs! I appreciate your help. Thank you. :)
I would love to learn how to repair my vehicles, but when I asked to be taught, those people actually laughed at me! Yes, laughed! From what you just said, it isn't only about "knowing" but also having equipment to do this...do they rent these things?

It sounds like your voltage regulator is faulty. Its either external or internal meaning inside the alternator. The regulator regulates the output of your alternator, with the bright lights it sounds like its overcharging your battery. When the light is on have someone check the voltage at your battery, it should be anywhere from 13-14.5 volts if it show alot more then you either have to change your alternator or voltage reg. Hope this help, good luck

So when your headlights brighten, its telling me your alternator is charging. What it is charging is something you can find out if you have a multimeter. You put the multimeter on your battery and turn it to 20vdc and read the meter. It it is reading 14 plus volts everything is ok. If the battery is reading 12 plus when the motor is off everything is ok. Start from ground zero and start learning how to do these things.
