why would pizza need to be cooked differently at a higher altitude?

I was cooking a frozen pizza tonight and noticed that on the directions it said that if you are at an altitude of 3500 feet or more the pizza needed to be cooked differently. Basically at high altitude it needed to be cooked at a lower temperature for a longer period of time.
This makes no sense to me, why would the pizza have different directions depending on your altitude?
