Why would my sucker fish change color?

I just got a little sucker fish, and at the pet store he had black and tan stripes. When I put him in the aquarium he was light brown and tan. I thought it was just the lighting at the store that made him look different. But after a few hours he was black and tan again. How is this possible? Why does this happen?
 
Maybe its the food you give it, that could be the problem or it just changes colors to the things you have in the tank.if you have green sea weed it could turn green so it can blend in this is only my guess.
