Why Would My Sports Coach At School Have Us Use A Broken Hokey Stick For Baseball?

I'm Sixteen, male, and Sophemore in High School, and I'm an amateur at baseball. A couple weeks ago, I didn't know how to hit a baseball, but last week, I practiced for a couple of hours, for about two days. (I'm one of those people that can improve drastically, when I practice the first time, if I know what I'm doing), Two days ago, I was hitting the baseball like I'v never hit one before, but today for some reason, even though coach had bats, he decided to use a broken hockey stick for our class to play baseball with. The Hockey stick has the bottom shape removed, and layers of duct tape covering where the bottom part should be. It was much harder to hit the baseball like that, but I still managed to hit it several times without getting out. Why would Coach have us use something so thin for baseball? Any ideas?
