Why would a 2003 Toyota Matrix INCREASE gas Mileage?

2003 XR, manual 5 speed transmission, front wheel drive. Went from averaging 32 to 35 MPG to averaging 42 to 45 MPG.

Not complaining, but curious how this might have happened or if it might be indicative of some underlying problem. The only change was where I was getting my gas, but I didn't change the octane level of the gas I was getting (87).
This is a sudden increase as I check my mileage with every fill up. It jumped up after one fill.

depending on the station gas is not the same quality. Gas degrades over time. The gas you put in your car can be anywhere from 2 months to almost a year sitting at the gas station. different stations also put in addidives so the gas last longer.

Other explanations, you improved your driving since you checked your gas milage last. from the time i got my car to now i increased my average milage by 8 miles per gallon just by driving more gas frendly.
