Why Won't 'Windows Media Player' Play DVD?

I've just installed 'Windows XP Pro', but after trying to play a DVD in 'Windows Media Player', I receive the following message;
"Windows media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer".
Any advice much appreciated in the solving of this problem.
