Why won't sound come out of my speakers?

Alright - for starters I drive a 1990 Geo Metro (no laughing). It has an older after market head unit in it. It was really scratchy, so I popped it out and reconnected all the wires. Now the unit has power and everything (the time stays correct when the car is off), but when I turn the radio on my speakers don't put out any sound. I checked every fuse in the fuse box and on the head unit itself, but none of the fuses were blown. Any ideas?
