I think you need to get a little bit more specific here. Make sure you're pressing the right buttons first. You can also try doing the smash with another character. Or you can check the game type to make sure the settings allow smashes to happen. I get this feeling that you aren't a total noob and you've already tried these options. I think that if anything, its a problem with your memory or perhaps your disk. The only thing I could suggest would be to reset your settings. Delete your data and start over. I feel positive that it would work, but it would also take off everything that you've worked so hard for. Hope this helps!
