Sounds like a defective starter selenoid, but could just be the starter motor itself.....Either problem dictates a return to where you purchased and get an exchange....While there get them to test it for you.....
ok my friend i will think that the battery is not your problem but check it if the negative wire is in the negative post and after that check the new starter it could be not in the right position if it is not the problem check the wires that are connected to the starter. after this try to start it up. that should be it
I have a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We put in a brand new battery and installed a brand new starter. But it still won't start. When I turn the key all the lights turn on, the radio works, everything. But all it does is make this fast clicking noise. Which I'm guessing is the brand new starter trying to work. What could be the problem now? It's driving us crazy!
you jeep does have a starter relay under the hood in the fuse box all you got to do is swap it with another one to rule it out. To verify the stater is good all you go to do is crawl under the vehicle and jump the little lead on the starter to the power lead from the battery. Jeeps do have a neutral safety switch which is built into transmission gear position sensor it`a on the right side of the tranny . The grease loves to gum up and prevent a good contact. fixed one about a month ago by cleaning the grease and contacts and reinstalling.
could be the starter check the cables make sure they are clean and getting a strong connection the cables may need replacement sound like you are not getting enough voltage and amperage to the starter that clicking noise is the solenoid engaging and droping back down because of the load the starter trying to crank but there isn't enough juice
