Why wont my Iphone charge? And why is the screen turning black?

OK I have had my Iphone for about a year or so and today i put it on the charger and it wont charge the only thing on it is the battery and a red line on the battery? Also before that yesterday and other days before that my Iphone had a black screen it had it on for a few minutes.. So what should I do Please help.....?
