Why wont my headsets work?

I just bought a new headset and i was hoping it to work...but when i plug it in...i cant hear anything! I tested out playing a song on youtube and i cant hear anything...Please help. I don't want to return it because my dad will get REALLY mad...im using XP btw...I've also tried adjusting the sound on the lower right, including microphone and such
