why wont my blackberry charge?

i got a new blackberry curve and it wont charge. i plugged it up to the charger and all that happens is the screen lights up and has a battery with a red line through it. it says its not charging but the screen doesnt go out so some power has to be going to it right? and then it wont turn on because its "not charged"
