Why wont my 98 ford explorer go in reverse?

I have a 98 ford explorer with approx. 140,000 miles on it. i've been driving it problem free for about 3 years. but a couple months ago i tried to back into my buddy's driveway. i put it in reverse, gave it some gas, then after about 5 feet it i heard a THUD...now? no more backwards. when i shift into reverse, it is the same as being in neutral (except the reverse lights go on). it just revs when i give it gas. i now have to park someplace i can pull through, on a hill,or i have to push myself out in neutral...and everyone laughs
i understand that there is something wrong with my transmission. if i am going to be replacing it, how much would it cost? is it worth doing? or should i just try and part it out/ junk it and buy something else?

sounds like your transmission is bad.. either get a new one or get it fixed and that should solve your problem

if the car is in good condition in and out i would just suggest you to go to a junkyard or wreckyard however you want to call it and get a tranny there, they tend to have alot of explorers and they usually charge only 100 per transmission.. but this is if you want to do it yourself, otherwise it would just be better to get another car
