Why won't my '93 Buick Lasabre shift into gear?

It shifts on the dash but not in the engine. If I rev the engine slowly until almost floored it will most of the time, but that must be damaging the engine. What is going on with this car? I am embarrased and would like to fix it, but I need some possibilities to check out.
 
The problem is not with the engine, but rather the transmission. It sounds like a linkage problem. I am not for sure on your car but some cars have wires that run from the shifter at the steering wheel to a little solenoid on the transmission which shifts the gears. There could several thing that could be wrong. If I were you I would go to a shop that can give you a free estimate. That way once you know exactly what is wrong with your car you can call around for the best price on getting it fixed. Make sure to tell them if the problem exist only from going from park to drive or if it doesnt change gears correctly while driving which could indicate bigger problems.
