Why won't my 1992 Honda Civic battery charge?

My battery went dead in my 1992 Honda Civic. I jump started it and it started and ran good for about 5 minutes. I drove it to the store, and the accessories stopped working on the way there, the speedometer stopped working, the lights didn't work, etc. When I got to the store, I sat in the parking lot to see if it would keep running. After about five minutes, the car died. I went in and got the new battery and replaced it. The car started back up fine and I drove it home, but the battery warning light on the dash was on. Now, when I turn the headlights on, other accessories dim or stop working. Also, I checked the battery, and the voltage doesn't go up as it should after you start the car. I'm pretty sure I fried something when I drove on the bad battery. Did I ruin the whole alternator, or is it maybe the voltage regulator, or something else? Thanks
Also, my battery died because I let the car sit for three months.
 
alternator is gone. replace it and problem is solved you didnt fry anything you should have replaced the alternator from the beginning. what you described first are all symptoms of a bad alternator.
 
Battery and alternator should be working hand in hand. One should be in good working condition for each other to function properly. In your case, your alternator is not functioning properly causing your battery to loose charges. Your battery warning light is on saying that your alternator is not charging your battery. Have your alternator check by a good mechanic. Check also your alternator belt if its loose because it can also cause discharge to the battery. Hope this helps!
