Why won't itunes / apple accept my debit card?

I have just acquired my shiny new iphone. I have registered it and now trying to use itunes for music and app downloads. Everything is fine, apart from it says it doesn't recognise the card i'm using? All numbers etc are correct, country (UK) etc. I've tried so many times. It's just a bog standard Natwest Maestro. Why is it not accepting / working? Anyone else had this problem? Thanks
 
Maybe the problem is your debit card is not supported in their debit card list. You should check if your debit card is internationally supported by online stores and companies.
 
Yes maybe the debit card is not supported in their list. There are some credit and debit cards that are really common to be supported, like master card and visa card.
