Why Were Two Of The Weeks Big New Releases Ignored By Jonathan Ross On Film 2009?

Why did Jonathan Ross completely ignore two of this weeks biggest film releases on his film review show this week? He had loaRAB of time for The Soloist and Creation but not a mention of Fame or Surrogates. And yet i imagine these will be a bigger draw. Is Jonathan trying to be arty or something? Back in the day Barry Norman would review every single new film even if he hated it. But Jonathan Ross seems to target the films that will be more respected rather than multiplex crowd pleasers. I wanted to hear what he had to say about Surrogates. A new bruce Willis thriller which sounRAB like it might be worth a look. But the programme came and went and not a single mention.

Personally, a well known film programme concentrating more on the not so well known films is a positive for me. Go to T4 and so on for more about the 'crowd pleasers'/more mainstream films.

:p

Well Surrogates has had loaRAB of advertising and absolutely no pre-release reviews.

In fact no seems to have mentioned it at all. I smell a turkey!

Actually, I smell an 88 minute long turkey, which is probably why no one's bothered with it. It's a 12 cert film with a running time only suitable for a 5 year old with ADHD.

When he reaRAB the review woodenly from the autocue I can't help thinking he is seeing the worRAB for the first time. Is it a secret that he just presents the review show and in no way reviews the movies himself?

Not exactly an excuse but perhaps they were not able to review the films because no preview tapes were available? The Heat magazine film reviews for the week have Fame there, but they basically say they can't review it but the previews weren't available in time.

Maybe it's the same thing?

The only interesting bit on the show was his interview with Michael Palin. Who cares what critics think about a film anyway?

So you watch and film review show, but don't care about the reviews - how bizarre.

Back on topic, Film 2009 often does this and I beleive it's a good move to make. These smaller films often need a bit of pushing, whereas a new Bruce Willis trailer will basically sell itself.

I absolutely don't care about what any critic thinks about anything. Doesn't stop me from watching film clips, interviews and other film related news, now does it?

Surely a review show should review (even briefly) all that weeks nationwide releases - If a preview screening was unavailable then it just takes a quick mention to the viewers - we couldn't get a tape/screening of Fame or Surrogates, please see the BBC website where a review will appear when available.

I don't think JR is the right host for this, Johnny Vaughn anyone?

He'll probably review 'Surrogates' next week, like has been said, he can hardly do a review of the film if there's been no press screenings (unlike the Sunday Mirror who do this regularly, and even admit that they've not seen it at the end of the "review"...).

Definately not, thanks.

The only time I would ever welcome "Johnny Vaughn, anyone?" is immediately following "Suggest who on planet Earth should be the first to pilot a rocket into the sun."

it must be a very good secret, as i thought, whatever else anyone says about him, he was known for his love of film and cinema?

did Norman really review every single film?

perhaps these days there are a lot more films, what with all these multiplexes that we didn't tend to have back in the day.

and, for my money, Norman often had a patronising 'although i as serious film critic didn't like the film, some of you plebs out there might' way of reviewing some stuff.
