Why were those Americans hiking in Iraq?

I have to admit I'm a little mystified about why Americans would be hiking in Iraq in the first place. That might be one of the most ill-advised things I've ever heard of. There's a war going on and the place is crawling with anti-American Islamic radicals who would like nothing more than to decapitate someone, yet they pick this place to go hiking? You'd think they'd be pretty good with maps to attempt such a trip, yet they stray across the border into Iran? I'm not buying the government's line on this. What's your take?

I would think if somebody wanted to hike in Iraq (or Afghanistan) they would join the Army or Marines. I'm sure they would see to it they got a lot of hiking done. And other things like shooting, etc.

There are a lot of areas in the world to hike, but in a war zone? There just must be some rush involved that I don't understand. Or they weren't hikers, like working for..... Better not say, they are in enough trouble already.

don't start the whole conspiracy theory...I think it is ill advised for so many muslims to be living here in America and they really do have an ulterior motive!!

I doubt if many can understand their choice. I know I cannot fathom anyone needing to hike around in Iraq. There are plenty of great hiking spots in the USA and if you needed something more exotic there are plenty of safer hikes throughout the world.

I guess we will have to wait and see how it plays out.
