why were bicycles needed back then?

Ummm don't you think they were needed far more back then than now? Mode of transportation IF you were fortunate enough to own one was horses or your own two feet. Bicycles over time became more functional and served to get folks from one place to another, for exercise and pure pleasure.(1871 brought the most efficient bicycle, as earlier ones had no pedals, some, no steering, some made out of wood.) My big question is how did women with their long skirts and petticoats get up on those tall bicycles?)

Well, the bicycle wasn't invented til the century after that, but, to answer your question, it was invented to be a mode of transportation. It is faster than walking, though still slower than riding a horse. A mode of transportation is defined as a device or action utilized in order to transport something tangible (such as oneself, or perhaps a perishable good such as yogurt...key lime pie flavor anyone?) from one place to another. Other examples that should be noted are the automobile, boat, plane, or possibly a highly tamed liger. Ligers are a cross between a lion and a tiger, and are thought to have magical powers. They're just about the coolest animal ever....God!

Sorry to burst your question all over the place but bicycles were not invented until about 1886 and were very few then as it seemed a silly way to get around and were generally looked down upon.
