I've recently discovered this term, Heroic Medicine, and the little I've read into it I've learned that the term is considered slightly ironic, because it was the patient who had to be "heroic" in order to survive.
I'm confused by this definition of why it's called "Heroic Medicine." It seems that if that was the case, it would be considered a retrospective title. Yet, as I understand it, it was actually called heroic medicine while it was being practiced.
So why was it called "heroic"? Who coined the term? When did it start?
