Why was the old testament written in ancient times and what was it used for?

the compiled Old Testament was written by many different authors during a long period of time. it's doctrine is consistent.

they were compiled by the jews so that they may live by it. leviticus is a book within the Old Testament books that tell the jews how to conduct their spiritual lives.
 
the old testament had many purposes. Some of it was to show where we came from, the lineage of Jesus, different prophecies leading up to our time now, different prophecies telling the Jews about their Messiah. Those are just some things...there is so much that you can derive from it if you believe in the Bible.
 
God told Moses to write down the first five books of the Bible. The rest were written has they happened. The reason they were written was so we would know that if God told us,what His elect did way back when, then don't think He wouldn't tell everyone else what we do. Also there is a hidden time frame of 6200 years from Adam to the year of Judgment. Adam to Abraham was 1948 years. Abraham to the birth of Christ was 2170 years. Christ to the cross was 33 years. 2170~Matthew 1:17 or 42 generations = 51.666666 years per generation. 51.666666 x 120 =6199.999999 years. Adam to the cross was 4151 years. You can do the rest.
