Why was the nose of the Sphinx and some of the Pharoah sculptures knocked off?

Is it because of the appearance of the nose?
Tonallc, yea I heard because of Napoleon because he was racist. But why racist if the sculptures were Egyptians and not the africans?
 
No, it's because it fell off through time, erosion and weather. There are urban legends that Napoleon shot it off with a cannon, for fun or because was racist; or that Germans knocked it off in WWI or WWII; or Arab conquerors in 690; or that a Sufi named Sa'im al-dahr knocked it off in 1378.
 
No,it was used as target practice although many conspiracy theories exist they're all nonsense.
