Why was the election portrayed so strangely on the news?

Okay, so I know a LITTLE bit about the electoral system and I know it counts more than popular vote. So why did the news always watch so close on the popular votes for each state, then declare their "projection" of who's going to win the electoral votes for that state (like CNN even FOX)?

They kept showing the popular votes per state for the president, but then when it reached about 10% completion for the state, they started to declare if Obama/Mccain won.

Isn't watching the popular vote supposed to be more for a feel of what the nation felt as a whole? I think a lot of people who watched the news last night that aren't familiar of the electoral process, might think that the people's votes count directly for the choice of the president...Can anyone explain?

The popular vote of each state determines which candidate receives that state's electoral votes; the popular vote does count.
