Seems to me that the Serpent didn't get his due in the Garden of Eden story.
If he was a snake he was already moving along on the ground (otherwise he'd have been a lizard.) So crawling on his belly was not a new thing.
God's threat that the daughters of Eve would "bruise his head" was kind of an empty threat because snakes are still very dangerous and kill and injure many people every year. They seem to be giving the daughters of Eve a good run for their money.
Adam was given a hard life scratching out a living and Eve was given terrible pain at childbirth. The snake got what? more of the same life he'd already had?
Could it be that God was not as angry at the Serpent because He'd sent the Serpent to do a job, such as testing His creations for loyalty?
