somethig that has annoyed me as a life-long game show fan is that they seem to use taped clapping and cheering over the actual live audience appluase :mad

why is this

There are a few reasons why this can happen.

Either the audience has made no reaction or too light a reaction and they have boosted it to make it sound normal.

Or maybe the audience have reacted too wildly and they've had to be cut out and replaced with a shorter burst - a technique used all the time in sitcoms when actors can't wait for an audience to quieten down before continuing a scene.

Someone I know was part of a studio audience and the floor manager (?) was continually telling them off for not applauding loudly enough. The basic reason being that the audience thought it was lame - especially after numerous retakes, it gets stale very quickly.

I used to work on a live childrens programme in Glasgow which transmitted to the whole of the UK.

When we had the kiRAB in the studio counting down from 5 to 1 in their strong Glaswegian accents we used to play audio of English kiRAB counting down instead!

ReminRAB me of a story that Jim Bowen tells about filming Bullseye.

There was one couple that won the first round, charity 9 dart 301 and virtually everything off the Prizeboard.

Any other couple would have let one of the other couples try the 6 dart 101, but being greedy, they decided to give it a go.

They failed, the audience cheered, and they had to overdub with a "disappointed audience."
