Why two Sonic cartoons in 1993?

I remember liking the cartoony one as a kid, dunno about SATAM but after seeing some of it I dunno how am I supposed to take a show about a blue hedgehog seriously. Oh yes its darker but so is eveything else when I where sunglasses, but the backgrounds are better and more detailed then Aosths desert roads which seem to always have a yellow sky. SATAM is one of those rare cartoons that got night skys right, they're black or grey! Not blue!
I didn't mind Sally or Rotor but we didn't need another cowardly fo... coyote, Antoine also being French seemed more like a Aosth character then something from a serious show. Did anyone else notice that Robotnik in that show sounded like Cat (Both are Jim Cummings) and his sidekick sounded like, well, half of the other characters Charlie Adlers voiced?
His name was Wilhuff Tarkin, a somewhat forgetable character despite doing more then that guy with a jetpack, atleast movie wise.

Actually, other way around. Vader was playing second fiddle to Tarkin in the original. It's Tarkin's death and the destruction of the Death Star that lead to Palpatine loosening Vader's leash a bit and allowing him to spear head the attempts to crush the rebels. Snively is best compared to one of the other named Imperials Vader interacts with in the two sequels, they're much more cast in the role of 'second in command to an unforgiving tyrant'.

That I knew, by a guy with a jetpack I ment Bubba Fett who just escaped the good guys and got eaten by Seymors plant, Tarkin ran the Empire and ordered Alderans(a planet) destruction!
Back to Sonic one of my problems with Satam is it felt like its premise was by a high schooler for an assignment: "Lets see, we need Sonic and Tails and we need characters with flaws, oh I just love that Sally Acorn characer of mine, she can be Sonics sidekick! I'll just have Tails stay in bed, he's useless.". These "flaws" have predictable results too like Dant... Antoine being brave later on, Rotor not being dim-witted, and Sally wearing clothes.

It's kind of ironic... I saw this thread earlier this week, started thinking about the show quite a bit despite not seeing either cartoon very often, didn't really talk to anybody about this thread, but for Chrismtas I got the complete series boxed set for the SatAM series. I guess people like tpo read my mind.
