Why The Pierce Brosnan As James Bond Backlash?

Back in 1995 when Pierce brosnan was cast as James Bond everyone seemed to think it was a great choice and Goldeneye seemed to go down a storm. Right through to Die Another Day there seemed to be no problem with him or the four films he made. Now suddenly six years later there seems to be a backlash against him. Die Another Day is now regarded as another Moonraker and people on here are constantly slagging him off. I saw reviews in a mag the other day of the blu ray release of The World Is Not Enough calling it one of the worst Bond films ever and extremely dated. Well that cant be helped as it came out a few weeks before the millenium. What about older Bond films. There will always be something that makes them look dated. I thought Pierce brosnan did a good job in the role and I loved Tomorrow Never Dies. One of my favourite Bond films. Remember three years ago with the Daniel craig backlash before the poor guy had even been given a chance. Back then everyone wanted PB back. So please, why is everyone so anti Pierce Brosnan now?
 
What? Where did this come from? Some magazine reviewing blu ray films? Daniel Craig is 2 films deep, i thought everyone had moved on? I guess people fear change. Brosnan was solid, Craig had his doubters before and has proved he too is solid.

Lets face it, the Bond films were lacking in a little direction before the reboot. Goldeneye was great, the later ones were poor, mediocre at best.
 
I think the two main problems are that Goldeneye set a high standard that the other films didn't live up to and also that Die Another Day was quite ridiculous.

Die Another Day had some good things in the first half but the second half just turned into some weird sci-fi/superhero nonsense. (and the CGI paragliding looked terrible and was stupid too).
 
Brosnan's problems are three fold.

Firstly, his last Bond film was Die Another Day - probably tied with Moonraker for worst Bond film ever. Although Goldeneye was brillant, it's now 14 year old!!!

Secondly, Jason Bourne has changed the way in which people views actions films/thrillers. People want the protagonist to get hurt every so often, and that never really happened with Brosnan.

Finally, a lot of Bond fans always seem to view the older Bond film through Rose tinted glasses, forgetting that some of them were dreadful - 58 Roger Moore seducing girls young enough to be his granddaughter in View To A Kill anyone?
 
my son has already got down a box set of Pierce Brosnan bond films for his christmas and he'd be annoyed to hear of them as being some of the worst
 
Brosnan was fine. Die Another Day was ridiculous, they threw too much nostalgia at that movie over any drama.

My biggest problem with the Brosnan films were their execution. I'm sure people will think WTF? when I say this, but they felt and looked like TV movies. The locations and sets just never seemed big enough. They didn't feel Bond at all.

Casino Royale bought back all the good visuals I love about Bond movies.
 
Yeah, I agree that Die Another Day was pathetic, but Brosnan was my Bond (I was born in 1990, Tomorrow Never Dies is really the first I remember properly!) and I like most of the films from his tenure.

TND was fantastic, imo, as was Goldeneye. The World Is Not Enough was good, but like I said ... DAD was where it fell, imo.
 
I'd add that Brosnan's performance was handicapped by being essentially an amalgam of Connery & Moore erring towarRAB Moore era ham.

He's also too physically slight for the role so he's bound to come up short in comparison to the other BonRAB.
 
There were some great Bond moments under Brosnan's watch

1. The entire pre-credits sequence of Goldeneye. Bloody superb, and great to see Bond team up with another 00, even if he did eventually betray him.

2. Tomorrow Never Dies, the punch up at the conference, where he goes nuts in the interrogation room as Carver is giving his party thing. The opening sequence again in the jet at the arms fair.

3. The World is Not Enough, the opening sequence where Bond ties himself to the bodyguard at the bank and jumps out the window with the briefcase, before coolly walking up the road as the policia scream past. Top notch.

4. And despite its sheer terribleness, Die Another Day could have been so promising, because the beginning in North Korea, the capture and neat titles sequence that show his interrogation are good, it just falls on its arse after that sadly.

I liked Brosnan's Bond, especially the first two
 
I enjoyed Goldeneye, but quickly tired of Brosnan's slimy smarm. It doesn't help his cause that Tomorrow Never Dies is easily my least favourite Bond film, aside from the first two (I could never get in to Dr. No and From Russia With Love :o).

He had his moments, but he just never did it for me.
 
DaD may have had dodgy fx on the tidal wave, and the almost sci-fi invisicar ..... but it did have that unbelevable plane ending!!!!

i actually force myself NOT to watch it on tv, until i watch it on dvd again, because of that .....
 
I wouldnt say Brosnan, except in GE, was too slight to play Bond, as he put on over 20 pounRAB of solid muscle between GE and TND. And he wasnt any slighter than Moore.

My fav Brosnan bit?.

The 'taking out' of the arms bazaar in TND. I thought that opening scene was superb.
 
I loved Pierce as Bond! Goldeneye, TND and WINE are 3 great films. Granted, Die Another Day was a bit crappy but i've warmed to that too in recent years. (It's still ridiculous though! :D) Bits of that film were really good but they ruined it with their 'oh so fantastic' SFX....

Give my any 4 of his movies over the dire Quantum... :sleep:
 
I still don't think Daniel Craig cuts it as Bond. While Casino Royale is good enough, I think PB would have done a better job. While Quantum of Solace is the worst Bond movie since The Living Daylights.
 
In my opinion, on a curve of going from "serious to ludicrous", the four Brosnan films do that in chronological order, and yet you cite the last two as the more serious. Curious.
 
The villains in the Brosnan films were a bit rubbish though. Mikkelsen's Le Chiffre was as much an improvement over the previous bad guys as Craig was over Brosnan.

Conversely Mathieu Amalric's Dominic Greene is so forgettable that I have literally forgotten all about him.
