i agree with what you are saying, but a movie about a star, it just doesn't seem like him.
I think there is a greater reason to why he took this role, i just can't say what.

there are no gay pirates in the book. in fact, there's not much fighting in the book. i think the gay pirate was put there as a comic relief, and i thought it was well done. also, he was there to teach Tristan how to fight, which also came handy in the end (and there is no fighting at the end of the book, altho i cant remember how the witch died).
