Why talk about caves when discussing water?

I don't understand the question I'm suppose to be asking:

Why are we studying caves in class when our unit is about water?

Basically, if anyone could just explain to me the connections between caves and water if would be a huge help.

Caves are generally created by running water, usually over a billion years or so. We don't typically see caves being made today because most caves where made when the earth was first created around 4.5 Billion years ago (Billion with a "B")
