Why sleep sex? Is it dangerous?

I wouldn't call this major news. But it just happened. I decided to ask other people about this.
My high school niece had a sleepover at someone else's house. A few guys are girls were there. Probably 15-18 people.
The morning after, some of the girls were completely nude and such.
My niece was fine but she was concerned about her friends. She asked my sister and I about this. I heard about this and I want a second opinion. What happened?

I know, this question was weird.
 
were they naked on purpose.?
or did somebody else do it while they slepted.?
plz add more detail. . .i dont really know yur question.
