Why should people wear a helmet for riding bicycles?

I believe in wearing a helmet, but if someone is just out to ride around the block, or wants to go to a friends house, or ride to school, why should the person have to wear protective gear, if so, why not have pads, wrist guards, and a whole suit of armor?
