Why should I devote my life to a "greater good", while this can't be achieved...

...in my own life? ...like educating people to have a better nation, or saving the earth for the future generation and things like that.

Well ........ "the greater good" ..... while one may not live to witness actualization
of his dreams of something better for future generations ..... "the greater good" lies
in his devoted and righteous efforts to do so .....

It's a cooperative effort.

"Whatever you do will be insignificant.
However, it is vitally important that you do it." - Gandhi

" We are required to work to perfect the world.
You are not required to complete the task,
but neither are you permitted to abstain from it"
- (Maimonides?)

Man must choose between doing what is best for everyone or simply for himself.
I believe that choosing for everyone is the best thing for me because we can't be happy until we are all happy. To serve the interests of all men best serves my own interests. When the world is healed of it's insanity, my children's children may enjoy what was not possible for me in my lifetime.
Since their is no chance of finding it in my lifetime anyway, what am I really loosing? At least I will enjoy the company of those who are of like mind.
This has always been a question of how much do you love.
