Why should home economics be taught in school?

My children informed me yesterday that they want to do away with home economics in school and we are trying to find different people,s view on this subject. Please explain in a short paragraph why we should not give up on home economics.

It teaches life skills to --everybody-- not just girls. We were taught things like stitching something that ripped, cooking, balancing a check book, and practical things like that. Everybody has to leave high school at some point to live and take care of themselves in the real world, and not everyone is lucky enough to be taught this stuff at home.

Well home economics is taught mostly to girls so that when the grow up they know the basics of knowing how to cook, clean, and be a good mother. People that want to be chefs may do it. It teaches different cooking methods and mostly the components of what is in food and explains what they are and also the different types of food groups.

Schools are required to teach subjects that were once the domain of the home. They now teach manners, sex education and parenting in general.
With the curriculum so crowded, some subjects can be dropped if there are other avenues to get the information such as the Internet and television.
