Why should American federal funds be given to international groups that perform abortions?

My god, this is appaling! It's barely Obama's first week as president, and already reversed a ban on this issue. Appaling. Coupled with his Guantamo travesty. Truly appaling.http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090123/ap_on_go_pr_wh/obama_abortion_banTo the person who said "Abortion is a legitimate option for people":ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Abortion is an "option" for who? For irresponsible people who can't keep their legs closed?Yes Tobias, WE Republicans are the "idiots". You people are the ones who willingly elected a man who no prior noteworthy accomplishments. And on top of that, you all think he's going to "save the world". And btw, you've been reported.Patrick, Christianity teaches people that sex is for procreation only. Especially in very Catholic countries such as those that Obama willingly wants to give US taxpayer money to.

Why should it be withheld? Abortion is a legitimate option for people. Groups who discuss it as part of their educational programs shouldn't be penalized because the religious Right disagree. The religious Right need to realize their view is not the ONLY view.

They shouldn't be, but your going to see a lot more American money going outside the US from here on out!!He has to take care of his people

Because killing babies is so important, we need to spread that policy even more than we need to spread democracy.

Probably because the world is overpopulated and unwanted pregnancies in those countries often result in children who starve or are mistreated anyway. That same funding also supports sex education and birth control.

I hope you didn't vote for Obama, otherwise, you have no reason to complain. We all knew that Obama was an abortion supporter.

it turns my stomach. we have so many other problems right now. it amazes me -- people want "no kill" animal shelters but have no problem sticking up a long handled swirling multitude of blades to chop up a fetus (know is civilized worlds as a baby - the kind people come up and touch on the little bump to feel a kick or movement) slice and dice it and then suck it up and toss it out. we won't even talk about the second trimester abortions....amazing what this world has come to and where it appears to be going.

From the link you provided:"Women's health has been severely impacted by the cutoff of assistance. President Obama's actions will help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies, abortions and women dying from high-risk pregnancies because they don't have access to family planning," said Tod Preston, a spokesman for Population Action International, an advocacy group. For you to oppose this kind of humanitarian aid is what is appalling. BTW - Hillary would have done it, too.

Exactly! This is why Republican presidents do not do this! Not with OUR money! Hell, in this country, it may be a "right" but how does this equate to our taxes paying for abortions? Yet, it does. Besides, a 16 year-old girl could not have her broken arm set, without the consent of her parents!

Obama reversed a ban that will offer federal funding to family planning services so that women can have better access to birth control (thus less abortion), access to sexual education (thus less abortions), and health care for women. why do you think that the abortion rate drops when a dcemocrat is in office? Obama wants women to have the help they need to avoid pregnancy to begin with. Whats so wrong with that?

It is taxpayer money. Apparently for the last eight years they were getting along splendidly without our money.

Because responsible family planning is a good first step towards bringing the population growth of the developing world to a place where stability is sustainable, so those countries can develop and become responsible members of the international community. That way, we won't need places like Guantanamo Bay, because terrorism grows from oppression, and oppression grows from poverty.

The money isn't all for abortions, it goes to many other things, as other posters have noted (and received thumbs down for, because some people don't agree with intelligent answers). Abortions in these other countries will happen, but without funding they'll be coat hanger abortions. So you'd rather have people suffering through that, then getting properly taken care of. Very christian of you.

Because WE CAN. YES WE CAN.LOL ssss Overall I don't see why America give away our money period to support any foreign policy when we could be using that money to fund a shit load of stuff in our own country.

Truly appalling, indeed! Perhaps it's because for the previous reasons why American federal funds were wasted to finance injustice around the world; such as most attricious and abusive governments on this planet, torture (Egypt etc.), and death penalties (e.g. for females who've been raped or people who've been caught with prescription medications or small amount of alcohol for personal consumption such as in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc.) ... oh wait, that would include "only" already born people, sometimes proven innocent (like in Gitmo) and abortion, well that's different, that's really appalling!
