Why must you use a desktop computer to flash a Xbox 360 and not a laptop?

I am thinking about flashing my Xbox 360.I been reading that most people say you can only use a desktop computer.Why is this? The only thing I have is a laptop.It has a Esata port on it.Will it work if I buy a Esata to Sata cable to plug the Xbox 360's DVD drive to my laptop? Thanks
