Why is writing over the curriculum honored more than just "pure" writing?

I wish that writing could be regarded by itself with minor topics. For example, college classes based on fiction writing, biographical writing, nonfiction writing, creative writing, letter writing, writing poetry and more...

But writing seems to be more used for subjects, criticism, and literature.

What ever happened to the love of "pure" writing? Why aren't there academic careers/majors based on "pure" writing and the communication of the Major? English is a major, but it's not the same as writing...
