Why is water testing good for the environment?

I need a ton of help please answer ASAP! When i say "water testing" i mean like testing water at a river or a bay, etc. NOT FISH TANKS!!!!! Anyway thanks a bunch for answering and the first person who answers will get my vote ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
