Why is TV News leading with Rooney?

Its been the 3rd or 4th story all day--WHY??A player for one team-isnt such prominence out of all proportion?Poor news editorial values in my opinion.:eek::mad::confused:
 
I'd rather they led with the story about the statue of John Lennon at Liverpool airport,
Which according to the press has a plaque saying "Only the sky is above us" and that some wag had written below it "and only West Ham below us!"
 
football is THE biggest sport in this country!! And we live in a celebrity obsessed culture! That's why it's a big news story!!!
 
Annoy's me when they mention it in the main news, and then again in the Sports news later.

Surely it's either one or the other (I'm going other).

If you're interested you'll watch the sports news anyway, if you're not you can watch the main news without this so-called news getting in the way of more important things.
 
I'm taking a wild guess here, but I'd say all the news channels and bulletins are ACTUALLY leading on today's public spending cuts announcement.

The thing is, news programmes are just like every other programme - they are meant to chase ratings. That means if they present dry old (but important) information most of their expected audience will switch off. What "the people" want is soaps and reality. We know this from the ratings such programmes get. As a consequence, the news programmes give them soap and reality level gossip, rather than abstract and relevant information. They do occasionally try to slip in some actual important stuff - only if they have a some nice colourfull footage to go with it - but it's still all about attention spans, not presenting information. if they did that, they'd be the televisual equivalent of the FT and no-one would watch their channel.
 
The thing is, while they're holding back on his reasoning, this will be big news along the line of his initial break up with Coleen - surely it's not just a coincidence that they're back together, she is possibly expecting another child (I'm sure I saw that on the other half's cover of Closer magazine last week), and all of a sudden he potentially wants out of the country? This has 'marital fresh start' written all over it.

The question is will he go for the fame and glory (ie Spain, Real Madrid or Barcelona) or the money (Man City could offer him a fortune to stay in this country, and his pal Beckham may be able to get him into LA Galaxy)...
 
Just because you are not interested, why does that make it not a valid news item? Wouldn't it be great if we had a news programme completely dedicated to our own taste.
