This is the symptom list of Mercury Poisoning from the EPA:

* Impairment of the peripheral vision
* Disturbances in sensations ("pins and needles" feelings, numbness) usually in the hands feet and sometimes around the mouth
* Lack of coordination of movements, such as writing
* Impairment of speech, hearing, walking;
* Muscle weakness
* Skin rashes
* Mood swing
* Memory loss
* Mental disturbance

From wikipedia: Common symptoms include peripheral neuropathy (presenting as paresthesia or itching, burning or pain), skin discoloration (pink cheeks, fingertips and toes), edema (swelling), and desquamation (dead skin peels off in layers).

There is much more on symptoms from wikipedia.

But in short - it is nasty stuff.

Mercury is a toxic metal better know as "quick silver" because it's liquid metal.You'll see it on the bottom of some thermometers).
It's also toxic in it's powdered state "mercuric oxide".

Years ago it was used for filling by dentists( Mercury has a high affinity to gold and silver and binds them).
Here's some info.

Small fish DO NOT HAVE measurable mercury content. Enjoy your sardines, herring, catfish, bass, salmon, tilapia and shellfish guilt-free!

Mercury accumulates in a body over a lifetime. It means that older, larger fish are the ones which contain measurable TRACE amounts of mercury. Even then, heavy metals are most heavily deposited in the fatty organs of the animal, not the lean flesh.

In short, you will never get mercury poisoning from eating fish.
